Updates & Success Stories
Lassie
Highland Collie 3 years old female. Rescued in Lisbon, as she was going to be put down at the kennel where she lived. Nigel got her just in time - he absolutely adores her and has kept her.
Zack
10 year old gelding donkey. Originally bought 2 years ago from an old Portuguese farmer who beat him on his legs and pulled his ears hence he used to kick and we had terrible trouble putting his head collar and bridle on but eventually he learnt to trust us and is really confident now. Zack now has a lovely new home with a German family living in the area.
Storm
11 year old jenny donkey found in a barn up to her knees in manure. She had been tied up on a very short rope so she couldn't lie down and rest so she has very weak legs but she potters around the farm and enjoys a sunbathe whenever she likes. 15 Feb 2007: Storm died in her sleep last week. She will be missed but we are very glad to have been able to make the last part of her life much happier and pain free.
Miracle & Chancer
Mare and foal found in near starvation condition. The foal is much better. The mare is still dreadfully thin but slowly improving. When she came to us she was very anaemic and had liver problems. She must be feeling better though as she keeps trying to get to Trixie's stallion to flirt with him!

Update 15 Feb 2007:
The court case due to take place on 07 Feb did not go ahead as Animais and the horses' owner settled out of court.
Members of Animais have now purchased the mare and foal from the owner. This outcome means that the owner has gone un-punished (although he did have to pay court costs) and the law has not been challenged. However it was decided that to purchase the mare and foal to secure their future at the rescue centre was in their best interest, and of immediate importance, and we will continue campaigning for a change in the law.
We also discovered that the owner of the mare and foal also had a young stallion, which has now also been purchased by an Animais member.
