Try the main daily newspapers – they all advertise job vacancies. Most Portuguese newspapers carry vacancies every day. The Diário de Notícias and Público carry advertisements for work mainly in the Lisbon area, whilst Jornal de Notícias is better for vacancies in Oporto. The weekly newspaper Expresso is published on Saturdays and is the main source of specialist and management vacancies.
The Press in the UK:
Vacancies sometimes appear in the UK press, but they are usually to work for UK-based companies working in Portugal. International newspapers such as the International Herald Tribune carry advertisements for management, technical and professional staff. Professional journals and magazines available in the UK may also be a useful source of jobs, especially if the journal is world-renowned. Benns Media, a directory listing all UK trade magazines and journals, is available in public reference libraries.
The majority of private employment agencies are based in Lisbon and Oporto. Private agencies are listed in Páginas Amarelas under Pessoal Temporário (Temporary) and Pessoal Recrutamento e Selecçao (Personnel Recruitment and Selection). Larger public reference libraries in the UK may well hold copies of Páginas Amarelas.
UK Employment Agencies:
Some UK employment agencies that deal with work abroad are registered with the Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC). REC is a trade association of recruitment agencies and may be able to recommend an agency to help you in your search for work. If you write to REC outlining the type of employment you are looking for, they should be able to provide you with a list of suitable agencies. There will be a small administration fee to you for this service.
